History of Taylor Lodge #117 AF&AM
Taylor Lodge was the sixth Lodge to be chartered in Buckingham County and was anmed after its first Master Brother William H. Taylor. The Lodge was first located at Well Water and held its first communication on May 14, 1874. The Lodge shared the meeting site with the Grange.
The first members of the Lodge came from Stonewall Lodge No. 200. Nine of the members of Stonewall became the officers of Taylor Lodge. Stonewall Lodge also loaned Taylor Lodge a set of jewels for its first communication.
On September 28, 1895 a cornerstone was laid for a new lodge building at Centenary, Virginia. On November 2, 1895 Taylor Lodge held its' first communication at the present location. At the first meeting in the new building it was ordered that each tobacco chewer purchase a spittoon for his own use.
Grand Master Most Worshipful Harold R. Stephenson, a member of Taylor Lodge, returned to the Lodge on several occasions to conduct funeral services for various members.
Taylor Lodge has had fifty-seven different individuals as Master in the last one hundred and thirty years.
